Trust and Treachery

Elizabeth Laurence believes she has nowhere to go.  Her  brother, Gideon, has promised her hand in marriage to their sadistic neighbor, Tremaine.  To escape the man's lecherous grasp, Elizabeth seeks refuge with relatives in France.  There, she becomes the target of another obsession; the French Revolution has unleashed a frenzy throughout the county - and Rouen revolutionaries hate her for being English.

As these radicals' deadly plans solidify, Elizabeth receives a visit from a destitute  ragman, Richard Verinder, who has an interesting proposition.  To leave France before it descends into utter chaos, she must pretend to be his wife.  As a fellow Englishman, he will get her safely out of the country.

As Elizabeth begins the charade, shocking secrets emerge about her new companion.  Elizabeth feels an undeniable attraction to the man, but Verinder isn't who he claims to be - and his hidden could prove deadly to them both.

Anne Clare

Baron Lansdown!  “Condescending. Superior. Smug.”  And both cousin and neighbor to Anne Clare’s best friend, Lydia, now Lady Grantleigh.  The man is annoyingly correct; and, even worse, if her twin brother Anthony has his way, he’ll soon be her brother-in-law!  Companioning Lydia for the months before the birth of her first child has brought Anne a welcome change of scene, but none of the opportunities she longs for to “do something!”  And why?  Because of a triumvirate of “No” enforcers – Anthony, Lord Grantleigh, and the vehemently disliked Lansdown!

But when guests and neighbors gather to celebrate a pair of births, secrets and seduction, blackmail and revenge, plots and poison, and treachery and treason also gather around the village of Ashcoombe and its four nearby estates.  As the standing stones of Wyffa's Ring cast a long shadow over the land, villagers, workmen, servants, gentlemen, and peers come and go silently in the dark.  Night brings mysterious lights to the ruins of St Denis Abbey - and a pistol shot to Coombe Wood…
